A Detroit native, Keith’s exposure to electronic music via Industrial pioneers Skinny Puppy and Brian Eno sparked an early infatuation with synthesizers and audio software. Club life after high school inspired Keith’s interest in spinning records, connecting the dots to Detroit artists such as Plastikman, Underground Resistance and Carl Craig. During this time, Keith could be spotted collecting vinyl at various record stores around the metro Detroit area, and later selling vinyl at the revered “Dance Room” of Record Time as well as Dan Bell’s 7th City Distribution.

With a growing record collection, Keith set out to make his mark in the heyday of Detroit’s mid-90’s rave scene, cutting his teeth in the Midwest with travels across the country to Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Memphis, Milwaukee, Omaha, Chicago and of course Ohio and Windsor. These years saw Keith develop into a highly regarded technical performer, combining his love of house, Industrial and German minimalism with Detroit techno, highlighted with performances at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2002 and 2005, and now 2014.

This week we welcome back Kyle Geiger for his second mix on the Blank Code Podcast.  He certainly is no stranger to the international techno arena, with releases on heavy hitter labels such as Drumcode, Soma, Perc Trax, and Droid.  Refusing to rest on his laurels, Kyle continues to push the boundaries of his sound through the creation of his own label known as Cubera.  Kyle is not a producer first, DJ second, but chooses to look at both aspects of DJ and production as a whole; one is not complete without the other.

Originally inspired by the harder, percussive stylings the techno sound featured on seminal labels from the late 90’s, Kyle has witnessed the evolution of the genre as it morphed into a more accessible, groove based sound. Still loving the energy and power of the more straight forward side of techno while embracing the genre’s changes, Kyle has refined his productions and DJ sets into what very well may be a new breed of soundscapes that pushes things forward for the next generation of techno to come.

A young boy, faceless in the pallid light, entirely gripped by these machines, source of this brutal black noise.  Dark, thundering bassdrums, distorted soundscapes and grooves start to emerge.  He lives for the machines.  The machines live for him.  This is Subjected, an amalgam of darkness, distortion and aggression.

Anomity as a function, mystical without usual clichés. No hiding behind masks, no digging in the past, no techno purism, no strive for fame – SUBJECTED stands for distinctly deep, identifiable techno.  Designed in the shadows, to be consumed in the darkness.  A label. Music, and nothing more.

When it comes to post-Basic Channel dub techno, Brendon Moeller is one of the go-to guys.  Since leaving his native South Africa for New York City in 1993, the dub technician has been proudly laying down his musical legacy on labels like Astralwerks, Mule Musiq and Six Degrees Records; working with revered vocalists like Paul St. Hilaire, Mikey Dread and Mutabaruka and fomenting relationships with scene institutions like Fabric, Berghain and Francois K.

Since then, the dub landscape has been for ever changing at his hands: sometimes under his own name, sometimes as Beat Pharmacy (almost exclusively on Francois K’s Wave Music) and sometimes as Echologist, he is behind seven full length albums to-date, each of which has breached the musical boundaries of what went before. Taking cues from jazz, techno, dub, afrobeat and psychedelia, Moeller’s aims are simple.

Listen to his music – or that which his label, Steadfast, has so studiously released since 2009 – and you’ll understand that Moeller’s music has a knack for making you think whilst you inescapably give yourself over to its infectious grooves, and his most recent Ecologist album only confirms that: Subterranean is a deeply experimental record that explores a throbbing, swollen underworld of subconscious sounds which, in its conceptual referencing of everything from shoze-gaze to ambient to rock, marks Moeller out as an essential pillar of not only the dub techno community, but of the electronic music world as a whole.
